Certification programs are provided in the colleges. A license is provided to the job applicant after he passes the exam.

Education of the Veterinary Technician  

For this field, a bachelor’s degree in veterinary science is needed. Knowledge of zoology is helpful. The veterinary technician must know about all kinds of pet animals and how to treat them.

Certificate programs are available in the colleges and universities. When the student attends these programs, he acquires the important skills and gets to know about the field. Some of the programs last for four years and while some others for two years.

A high school diploma or an associate’s degree is also helpful. Work experience is essential for vet techs as they have to deal with the health of the animal.

Outlook of the Veterinary Technician

The job opportunities are excellent for the veterinary technicians. Jobs are available in the big cities. But there are more job opportunities in the rural areas. The veterinary technicians are found in working in animal hospitals, research centers etc. Most of the technicians who leave the field are old and their places are filled by skilled persons. Due to more individuals adopting pets like cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, farm animals, reptiles and so forth, so too the demand for veterinary technicians is growing.

The competition for this field is less in the zoos and aquariums. To find work in a research center, the candidate needs a certificate. He must know how to handle the laboratory equipment. Lifting injured pets and treating them is important. When the animal is seriously ill, suitable medication should be administered to it.

Usually the veterinary technicians work for twenty four hours. They can also work for forty hours or more if the cases are serious.

Training programs are very important as they impart the necessary skills needed by the job applicant. Subjects like zoology, anatomy, veterinary science, etc. are taught to the person. After undergoing the course, the person has to pass the certification exam.
